Expanding your company in times of economic hardship can be difficult to orchestrate, especially financially. Here are a few tips on how to expand your company while alleviating your debt.

1. Give employees a prepaid visa card when they need to purchase something for the company. This way, you are not putting yourself deeper into debt, but are spending only the money the company already has. This way you always know how much you are giving your employees to spend, and you can look online to see what they have purchased with it.

2. Schedule monthly conferences with your managers to discuss each branch’s success. This meeting should keep both owner and manager on the same page with goals, problems, and success. These meetings can take place in the same physical location, or in a web conference. Web conferences make it convenient and inexpensive for companies to stay in touch with all of their locations, no matter how remote.

3. Change the plan when necessary. The most important element of meeting with your managers is to listen to what they say and make changes accordingly. If you are serious about getting out of debt, you must be willing to put off expensive projects that you are not sure you can afford. You may also need to reorganize priorities for projects if certain parts of the company are lagging behind in profits.

Getting out of debt as a company can be a stressful and long process. These tips can help you find the balance between focusing on getting out of debt as quickly as possible, and not forgetting your goals and where you want your company to go in the future.

The dream for small business owners becomes reality when it’s time to get to work on getting a small business off the ground. For small business owners, this is a very scary step that can be filled with pitfalls and a lot of tough roads. The real key is to make sure that you get yourself off on the right foot so you can stay fresh and stress free. It’s not easy to do, but it’s certainly worth the effort.

Money

You need to have money saved, not just for the start of your business, but for protection against the pitfalls. With a little bit of extra money, you can find yourself feeling good even as your business goes through the initial growing pains. There is no substitute for financial security.

Professional Help

No, this doesn’t mean an afternoon on the psychiatrist’s couch talking about your problems. What this means is that you need a little bit of expertise to make sure that all the little things are successful. For example, if your business is going to go online, you need to have a great web design company. Hiring a professional in the early stages can be crucial to a business’s success. Consider getting installment loans to help cover these essential costs.

Planning

The more planning you do, the less likely you are to feel stressed by the process. While there is such a thing as over-planning, you are not likely to run into that problem. Your business doesn’t have to stress you out. Be smart about it.

Many small business owners are always looking for ways to expand and grow the company. This will usually lead to more revenue and possibly options for franchising or selling portions of the business in order to gain profits. Choosing to expand to an overseas market is a tough venture, but can be very profitable if all necessary steps are taken prior to the change.

There are a few things to consider before starting the expansion. Different countries often results in drastic differences between cultures, and some business practices could be interpreted as offensive or rude. Language barriers can also be a hindrance for those who don’t speak the native tongues of other countries, so having to understand and speak properly in a new language can be difficult. Finding a representative in the country is often helpful, but it can be hard to find a trustworthy individual.

If all of these issues have been measured, and the positives seem to outweigh the negatives, the expansion can begin. With Internet access being available just about anywhere, business owners can do a lot of the legwork online. If the company features a product or service that needs to have a store in the country, employees can often be hired from within the community. This may mean different labor laws and wage requirements, so learning a great deal about business practices in the country is important.

Corporations that are able to expand overseas will often see a great deal of success. Although the road may be rocky, it could end up leading to drastic increases in revenue and potential customers.

Small businesses are where America’s jobs are and your small business is no different. When a business is small and lean, it’s usually more agile than its larger counterparts but there’s less room for the bloat that you usually find in the ranks of a coorporation’s employees. Make sure you’re cutting the fat and focusing on productive team members with these small business hiring tips.

First of all, try to hire people that look, think and act differently than you do. You want new hires that can bring fresh ideas to your small business. When you hire someone who’s had different life experiences than you, they can help you discover new ways to reach customers, think of ways to incorporate different technologies and challenge your overall belief systems. This doesn’t mean that you should hire your total opposite - it’s important for you to like your new employee because you’ll probably be working with him for a significant amount of time and it’s important to have similar goals. As long as your new employee is likable, smart and knows who the boss of the operation is, feel free to consider someone with a different background.

Second of all, have a clear idea what you need your new hire to do and how long it will take to do it. If you don’t have enough work for a full-time employee, you’ll save a significant amount of money by looking only for a part-timer. If you do decide that your businesss would benefit from bringing on a full-time employee, knowing what kind of work you want the person to do will help you choose the right person.

You love international work and want a career traveling beyond the beaten path. What are the highest paying international business careers, where can you get the training you need, and what are you expected to know?

International Financial Analyst

Help others interested in investment management and analysis achieve success in regards to ethics and professionalism. Take the LIFA examination, and see how high your level of investment principles really is. Get your bachelors degree from online courses that provide expert instruction for the most intuitive student interface. If you love math, work well with others, and have a convincing attitude, an international financial analyst career may be for you.

International Buyer

As an international buyer, you purchase products internationally at the lowest possible price and quality for later sale at wholesale and retail establishments; in other words, an international buyer sources and purchases items for re-sale. Do you enjoy numbers and working the best deal for the best possible price without letting go of quality? You may be the perfect niche for an international buyer, whether your training comes online or through traditional means.

International Commodities Trader

With roots in Japan, international commodity trading is, in a nutshell, trading between different nations. As an international commodities trader, you must know the agreements as well as the policies in place that govern trading internationally. You must learn the nuts-and-bolts of commodity trading strategy and know how to compare primary and secondary markets. Do you find satisfaction in working with others of differing nations? Love investing? Then becoming an international commodities trader may be the right career for you.

Most people find that they receive the services that they need when they hire a lawyer. In some unfortunate instances, though, you might find that a lawyer has behaved unethically. When this happens, you need to know the proper steps to reporting legal malpractice for your small business.

Gather Information and Documents

You will need to show some evidence that your lawyer has behaved inappropriately, so go through your business’s records to find all of the information that supports your accusation. Depending on the specific form of malpractice, you might want to look for letters, invoices, and court documents.

Contact the Bar Association

Once you have gathered some evidence, you will need to file a report with a bar association. Bar associations are responsible for professional licenses that allow lawyers to work in the United States. They are regulatory organizations that can help you investigate your case and ensure that any lawyer found guilty of malpractice faces strict penalties.

Find a Malpractice Attorney

You might feel slighted by those in the legal profession, but you could find that you need to hire an attorney to help you recover any losses that resulted from your previous lawyer’s unethical behaviors. The legal system can help you get the justice that you deserve and prevent unethical lawyers from practicing. For this to happen, though, you might have to make the lawyer’s indiscretions apparent by hiring a local legal malpractice attorney Los Angeles for your case.

Reporting legal malpractice can help your small business avoid the pitfalls of unethical behavior. Follow these steps and you can protect yourself from negative impacts to your finances and reputation.

The majority of stress surrounding a small business owner comes from managing cash flow and financial obligations. While owners have commitments to meet such as rent and mortgage payments, the revenue coming into the business may not always satisfy the bills. Instead of stressing over bills, business owners should take small proactive steps to improve incoming revenue.

Every business owner should have a plan and review it often. After completing the fiscal budget for the upcoming year, the business owner should take out his or her plan and review it. He or she should eliminate all tactics that proved failure in the previous year, and keep successful methods. Owners should also create new ideas that may lead to success in the coming year. After revising, entrepreneurs should execute their new plan along with the new budget. Constantly revising the initial business plan will keep the company up-to-date on the the needs of the client or customer and eventually lead to more revenue.

Another tactic that may be used to avoid stress is to research and apply for SBA loans. While a loan is typically viewed as more debt, SBA loans can help struggling business owners progress. Such funding can be used for hiring additional staff or equipment purchases. The average SBA loan ranges from two to five million dollars, and may exceed the five million dollar mark for energy-related endeavors.

Creating one’s own work schedule and being one’s own boss are positive entities associated with owning a small business. Meeting financial obligations and regulating cash flow can also be enjoyable.

When you are starting your own business, there are many things to consider, especially finances. Starting a new business is not always a cheap thing, and it’s definitely not easy. In fact, you may find that finances become one of your biggest stresses as you build your company. This doesn’t have to be the case. There are options out there that will help you have an easier time with your finances.

Loans

You may want to consider getting a small business loan. Unfortunately, these are not always available to everyone that wants to make their own business. If you are not able to get a small business loan through your bank or credit union, you can also try to get a personal loan. Many people who need a little bit of capital consider a payday loan to help. This can be very beneficial when you find that you just need a few more things for your business. Just make sure you can pay back any loan that you get.

Investors

If you have a great business idea, you may want to look into getting investors. There are many individuals and companies that enjoy investing in smaller companies. Finding investors may be easier than you think. Talk to larger companies that compliment your business idea. You may be surprised at what you find!

Having your own business is the American dream. More and more people today are reaching for that dream and grasping it tightly. Will you be the next to take the plunge?

Profits are meant to be earned: this has always been true and many seek out investment opportunities to get financial gains. No business ever succeeded through timidity. You have to be brave.

Bravery isn’t an excuse for poor decisions, however. Before entering an arena like the Foreign Exchange Market (the forex) you must first recognize how profits are truly won.

Choose Brokerage

The forex is a system as vast as the world it dominates. It’s imperative therefore to choose an ally to help you navigate the many rules and strategies. A brokerage firm — such as UFX Markets — is essential.

Understand Objectives

The intention of all forex attempts is to generate revenue. The amount of that revenue, however, and the time individuals wish to dedicate to achieving it varies greatly. Understand what you want to accomplish — and how much you are willing to work for it. Too often, novices are underwhelmed by early performances, refusing to continue with the exchange (assuming that it simply doesn’t work). No profit can be earned through mild efforts, however. You have to be patient.

Analyze the Market

Trying to transform your investments into dollars can seem daunting. It can quickly devolve into an impossible feat, however, if you don’t first study the market. Before any attempts can be made to penetrate the forex’s systems you must learn all you can. Examine commodities and their strengths, prices, and fluctuations. Understand the options available to you before trying to use them.

Remember these suggestions to gain a platform for success.

Hiring managers are faced with the unenviable task of finding and hiring the perfect person to fill vacant positions. It’s important that the person they hire be the best possible choice, since there are great costs – in terms of time and money – associated with hiring and training new employees. To hire a new employee only to have them leave and be replaced shortly thereafter can have quite the impact on a company’s budget. This is one of the reasons why good managers know to hire for attitude and train for skill.

Imagine two candidates interviewing for the same position: One has extensive experience in the field you’re hiring for, but you’re not impressed with his attitude or demeanor. The other is friendly and outgoing, with many of the skills you’re looking for but no experience in your industry. Which applicant would you hire?

Managers who hire for attitude would recognize the potential of the second applicant and hire her, understanding that attitudes are ingrained and not likely to change, whereas skills can be taught. Additionally, an employee with a good attitude is liable to have a positive effect on other employees whereas an employee with a bad attitude is likely to spread that attitude around to those around him.

While it’s important to seek out the most qualified applicants when filling vacant positions, it’s equally important to not rule out a candidate with the right attitude just because she may not have the exact experience you’re looking for.

Too often, companies seek to address issues of poor employee performance by requesting that employees undergo more training. Some times this is exactly what is needed, but more often it is not. As part of his Behavior Engineering Model, Thomas Gilbert proposed a Six Boxes model that can be used to identify where and why performance breakdown occurs. Three of the boxes deal with environmental factors (that is, the company) and three deal with the individual.

Gilbert’s Six Boxes are as follows:

Data (Environment)
Do employees understand expectations? Are they given feedback?

Instruments (Environment)
Do employees have the tools they need to succeed?

Incentives (Environment)
Are monetary and non-monetary incentives available? What about career advancement opportunities?

Knowledge (Individual)
Does the employee posses the skills and knowledge needed for the job? Have they been properly trained?

Capacity (Individual)
Does the employee have the ability and aptitude to do their job?

Motives (Individual)
Are the job and incentives worth it to the employee? What is the employee’s motives?

The answers to the questions posed in these six boxes will show why performance is either enabled or obstructed. According to this model, if there are gaps in any of the six boxes, there will also be a gap in performance. And if the gap occurs in any of the three environmentally related boxes, training won’t be able to help improve performance.

Living things thrive on growth and progress, and small businesses are no different. While there are admittedly those business owners who want to keep their enterprises small, there are many more who want to see their efforts expand and who measure their success by how quickly and efficiently they grow. But as any growing business owner (or parent who has ever raised a teenager) will tell you, growth is not easy – it is often fraught with pitfalls that must be avoided and mistakes that must not be made.

Some common mistakes that should be avoided if business growth or expansion is to succeed:

Growing too quickly
Businesses that expand too quickly risk collapsing just as rapidly. It’s important to move forward slowly and diligently and be aware of the change in culture that comes with growth.

Not enough capital
Growing and expanding requires money. Know where the additional capital will come from.

Inadequate infrastructure
The systems and software that are acceptable for a small business may not suffice for a growing organization. It is important to plan and update accordingly.

Staffing issues
Your staff will quickly become overwhelmed and possibly even disenchanted if business grows more quickly than they’re equipped to handle. And if your employees are unhappy, your customers will notice.

Expanding your small business can be exhilarating, but it can also be dangerous if not properly planned for. Make the most of your opportunity by proceeding with caution and avoiding the pitfalls that have derailed so many.

Foreign investment refers to any investment located outside of your country. Many people invest in foreign countries because of growth in their economies. People find that this is a great way to invest their money. There are four different types of investments that people use. When considering investing in foreign economies, you should look into the different types of investments and decide what type you want to invest in. Consider your wants and needs as far as investment goes, then decide which type is best for you. If you turn to companies such as GreatPlainsLending, you will find that they will be able to help you find loans that fit your needs. You can also use loans from other countries’ businesses to invest in their market.

Types of Investment

Foreign investment loans are loans that allow people to invest in other countries’ markets. There are two different types of foreign investment loans: commercial and official. Commercial loans are similar to bank loans, but they are issued to foreign businesses. These are looked at as a short-term form of money for foreign businesses. Official loans are loans that developed countries give to developing ones in order to assist them.

There are two other types of foreign investments: foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign portfolio investment (FPI). Foreign direct investment is a physical investment made in another country by a long-term agreement between two countries, usually by investing money in stock or land. Foreign portfolio investment is the investment in the stock market by the purchasing of stocks and bonds in a foreign company.

How Loans Can Help Your Investments

We live in an age of technological advancement, where many young employees have never known life without a computer. From books to music to college courses, more content is being made available electronically to anyone with an Internet connection. Successful Training and Development departments are taking advantage of this by augmenting instructor-led classes and presentations with online courses.

There are many pros to offering online courses:

With no travel or booking expenses for off-site training and no need to provide food or drinks, overhead can be cut, especially when considering that presentations can be recorded and reused.

Scheduling can be a nightmare, but online training allows for capturing a wider audience by removing the need to have everyone together in a single location.

People today have shorter attention spans than those of prior generations. Online training at its best accommodated this by being kept short, meaningful and targeted.

Thanks to advancements in eLearning creation software, online courses can easily be made available to users at any time. No longer is the presenter or instructor’s availability a restrictive factor: Presentations can be recorded and accessed at any time.

Online classes can lead to greater efficiency and better time management. Recorded presentations can often be made searchable, saving employees from having to replay the entire course if they missed a piece of information.

While traditional training has many practical applications and will never be replaced, the emergence of technology allowing for online courses is a benefit to corporations both large and small.

Imagine you are an employer searching for an experienced applicant for a specialized position. You’ve spent hours creating detailed job posts, scouring online job seeker databases and interviewing one unqualified applicant after another. Unfortunately, you have not yet found the perfect fit. Perhaps it is time to consult with a third-party headhunter.

Recruiters, commonly referred to as headhunters, are individuals who contract with employers to find potential applicants and help with some of the “heavy lifting” involved with screening qualified job seekers.

The biggest positive of using a headhunter is that he or she will seek out appropriate candidates for you and prescreen them prior to passing their resumes across your desk; this not only saves you time, but also from the frustration of sifting through large numbers of irrelevant applications. If you have a large number of specialized positions to fill, you might find a headhunter’s services to be in indispensable.

There are also some considerations and risks associated with employing the services of a headhunter. Recruiters, especially good ones, are not cheap – plan on paying for quality work. Also, some Headhunters are less reputable than others and likely to do little more than just scour sites like Monster.com for resumes, so make sure you do your research.

There may be times where it makes sense to outsource your recruitment work. But if you do choose to use a recruiter, never forget that you, the employer, have the final word. Always pick the applicant you feel best about.

Many people dream of becoming their own boss; indeed, the idea of being in charge and calling the shots is very appealing. However, only a small percentage of those with an idea and a desire to start their own small business do so – and the unfortunate reality is that an even smaller percentage actually succeeds. The fact is, slightly more than half of small businesses fail within their first 5 years. And if you are a first time entrepreneur, the odds are further stacked against you.

The reasons that a small business might not survive are many and commonly include a lack of sufficient capital, poor management or no idea how to effectively market. But one of the biggest mistakes that an aspiring small business owner can make is made at the formative stage: Deciding to start a business that nobody else cares about.

The idea of starting a new business is undeniably exciting, but just because the person with the idea thinks it’s brilliant and will change the face of industry, there’s no guarantee that anyone else will be interested in whatever’s being offered. This is why it is critical that a diligent amount of market research be conducted. Is there actual demand? Can it be proven that customers will be willing and able to pay for the product or service being offered? Are similar companies thriving?

Unless these questions can be answered in the affirmative, it might not be the right time to start a small business.

In a global marketplace, managing employees from a distance is becoming increasingly common. In many cases, the benefits of hiring employees in far off regions and countries outweigh the challenges. Still, when you’re responsible for managing a difficult employee from a distance, you will need strategies to make your job easier.

Difficulties Encountered

Some of the difficulties you will encounter when managing employees from a distance involve communication challenges. When you have a difficult employee on your hands, the distance can magnify the communication issues. If an employee is angry and does not know how to communicate well, you are left to figure out how to resolve the situation. In other cases, you may be dealing with an employee who is completely unresponsive. Maybe he tells you he will do something and he does not deliver. If this employee worked in your office, you would have monitored his activities daily. When he works in another state or country, it is a different story.

Strategies for Managing Telecommuting Employees

The first thing you want to do is establish a regular pattern of communication with the telecommuting employee. He has entered an agreement with you to do the work on time. Establishing a weekly conference call or daily check-in phone calls or emails are good ways to keep the lines of communication open. Even the most responsible people will sometimes engage in procrastination or shrug off responsibilities if they are not held accountable. Your job as a manager will be to set up systems to keep the employee feeling accountable.

If you set up these systems and the employee misses weekly calls or does not reply to emails in a timely manner, you have a decision to make. You will want to confront the employee directly. Set clear expectations. Give the employee only a few opportunities to meet expectations. Beyond that, it does not make good business sense to hang on to unreliable employees.

If you are new to interviewing job applicants, here are three tips for creating an interview environment that is conducive to finding the best candidate for the job.

Outline the Necessary Qualities for the Job

The first thing you want to do is be clear about the types of qualities needed for the job. You may already have a sense of this from a clearly written job description. If so, review the job description and make a list of the competencies the job requires. This list will include specific skills as well as personality traits and characteristics. The job for which you are hiring may require someone who is both familiar with the company’s product and has a vibrant personality to sell that product to as many people as possible. Outlining the qualities will help you to keep them in mind during the interview.

Ask Open Ended Questions

Next, make a list of the question you will need to ask to assess whether the candidate possesses the qualities that you have outlined. Try to avoid questions that can be answered by a simple yes or no. You want to generate a discussion and get a good feel for how the candidate expresses himself. Questions should be respectful and not violate the candidate’s privacy.

Create a Comfortable Interviewing Environment

Some beginning interviewers are self-conscious and, as a result, they create a tense interview environment. The more relaxed you are as an interviewer, the easier it will be for your job candidate to relax and be himself. Be sure to smile, shake the candidate’s hand, and offer him a comfortable seat. A little bit of chit chat at the beginning of the interview about the weather and whether or not the candidate had an easy time finding the job location, or similar subjects, will put him at ease. Beyond that, just relax and rely on your preparation to carry you through the interview.

Small business environments can be fun work places. When everyone knows one another, the workplace can take on the feel of a small family, with each member concerned about each other’s well-being. This dynamic can sometimes also lend itself to a blurring of the personal and professional lines. Here are a few ways to promote more professionalism in a small business environment.

When a Small Business Feels More Like a Family

The reason that some small businesses have a family feel to them is that some of them were, indeed, started by family members. These types of businesses can sometimes be lacking in professionalism. The problem can be complicated when extended relatives are hired and not everyone gets along with one another. Even in situations where the small business was started by a few friends who collaborated on a creative idea, professionalism can sometimes go out the window. While in some cases this is not an issue, there are situations where a lack of professionalism can result in the demise of employee relationships and productivity, impacting the bottom line of the business.

Ways to Encourage More Professionalism

Some small businesses have an unprofessional atmosphere in that everyone knows each other’s business. Employee salaries, for example, which are often confidential for good reason in larger corporations are often common knowledge in a small business. Managers in small businesses can make an effort to protect this information by not broadcasting this information to members of their teams. Varied compensation can be a source of jealousy and discontent between workers and keeping the information confidential can minimize this problem.

Another common challenge in a small business is that individuals tend to socialize a great deal on the job instead of working. Managers and business owners must establish clear expectations and regular breaks for employees to socialize when they’re not on the clock. Putting rules in writing and holding weekly meetings to enforce them can also make a difference.

When it comes to filing taxes, there is enough confusion to make anyone’s head spin because tax information and deductions and credits one year might not be the same the next. It is important for small business owners to stay on top of the numerous tax changes that are made throughout the year.

There are numerous changes to tax laws made throughout the year. The government and IRS are always adding new rules and regulations on what can and cannot be claimed and what papers must be filed to prove deductions or credits. Small business owners could face an audit or have to pay thousands in back taxes because they did not follow the proper procedures. Or, small business owners might lose out on new deductions introduced during the tax year.

Luckily, there are things that small business owners can do to make sure that they are on top of the latest tax changes. Small business owners could head to a well informed tax blog that is available on the Internet. These blogs carry all the latest news and information on the latest tax changes, so that the business owner will be able to stay up to date on what is going on when it comes time to file for taxes.

Another way small business owners can learn about the newest tax information is through the IRS website. Among the information the IRS offers each year is a summary of changes in the tax law in the past year, along with instructions and answers to a number of tax questions.

While actually filing your taxes for your small business might be confusing, finding the right information and news on tax laws isn’t. Remember it is essential to research new tax laws, especially if you are in the taxing or accounting business, in order to save you from the dreaded audit!

The world is getting smaller with each passing day. You can now collaborate with and hire people on the other side of the globe. This is an exciting possibility for business owners. It can result in financial savings as well as collaboration with people from various cultures and innovative ways of doing things. When you’re in the position of hiring people outside of your country, you’ll want to think through a few issues.

Saving Money and Handling Financial Contracts

One of the larger advantages of hiring people in another country is the amount of money that your business can potentially save. You might find that you can cut business expenses by half or more through hiring employees from other countries. If you need a programmer, for example, you might very well find a skilled coder who lives on another continent. His costs of living may be lower and he can afford to do the work you need for a fraction of the cost in your own country. You will just want to clarify the method and amount of compensation in writing so that there are no misunderstandings. Some services also act as intermediaries when hiring freelancers from other countries. Taking advantage of these services can often save you hassles because they handle the legal and monetary aspects of the contract.

Managing Communication Issues

The most challenging aspect of hiring an employee in another country is the potential miscommunication that can result from not speaking the same language. In some work environments, this is not as much of an issue. Translators can be brought in to discuss the most important information. In other situations, however, miscommunication can present a large cost to your bottom line. You will want to be sure that there are no significant language barriers before hiring.

With some careful investigation and thoughtful decision-making, hiring international workers can give your business an edge.

Web localization is a growing trend in the online world. As companies continue to go global, they’re discovering they canattract more loyal customers by providing information in their users’ native languages. To go even further, smart business owners are including cultural differences in their content.

Asking Goes a Long Way

Before taking this approach, spend some time measuring customer satisfaction levels on your current site. As part of the online survey, ask your customers which country they reside in and their native language. This can give you valuable information to decide where to concentrate your efforts first. Once you’ve localized, you can even use online survey software to ask your international customers a set of questions in their native language.

Localization Increases Engagement

By speaking your customers’ language, they’ll feel like your business cares about them and their community. Instead of being a nameless, faceless corporate entity located in some far away land, you’ll be just as friendly as a neighborhood store just down the street. In fact, this is the way that many global companies have dominated the world market in recent years.

Translation Services are Available

There’s no need to hire a staff of customer service people who are fluent in each language to successfully deploy a localization strategy. With a wealth of translation services that employ linguists from around the world, you’ll have no problem receiving and sending translated communications. As a bonus, most of these workers live in your target countries. This means that they are immersed in the culture and will instantly know what’s acceptable and what’s not. If you’re not careful, you could easily insult a valued customer with a simple mistake in wording.

To satisfy both your domestic and international customers, present a website that represents their interests and use online surveys to measure both your success and your need for change.

Managing people on the job can be a difficult task. A work environment comprised of many different types of personalities can create an innovative workplace. At the same time, different personalities can sometimes clash and this can present problems between employees, as well as between an employee and his boss. Effective management requires putting a few practices in place on a regular basis.

Communicating Clearly with Employees

One of the most important strategies for effectively managing employees is communicating clearly. Employees need to know exactly what is expected of them. Expectations can be outlined in writing. They can also be explained one-on-one by the manager. Weekly team meetings are also good opportunities for expressing job requirements without putting any one employee on the spot. Work environments with clear and consistent communication patterns tend to have fewer instances of conflict and discord.

Addressing Conflict Immediately in the Workplace

Another important strategy is to address conflicts as soon as they arise. Allowing a disgruntled employee to sit with his complaints for an extended period of time can create a negative atmosphere for everyone around. He might speak to others about his problems and create a ripple of negativity among employees. An effective manager takes the time to listen to grievances and addresses them before things get out of hand. Sometimes all that an unhappy employee needs is to be listened to and to have his value in the workplace acknowledged.

Rewarding Outstanding Job Performance

Employees need to feel appreciated. A good manager notices when employees do outstanding work. Rewarding praiseworthy work performance with a bonus, extra work privileges, or just a simple thank-you often goes a long way in helping workers to continue performing their best work. Drawing out the potential of workers can be greatly enhanced by instituting regular rewards for outstanding work performance.

Through clear communication, conflict resolution and acknowledgement of employee excellence, managers can create harmonious and productive work environments.

Training a new employee can be a challenge for both the employer and the new hire. Employers must deliver job-related information in easily digestible ways. New hires, by virtue of being in a new environment, often experience discomfort and anxiety that can sometimes interfere with learning. A carefully designed training program can make a large difference in a new employee’s orientation and progress on the job.

How to Prepare for the First Day on the Job

An employer who has hired a new employee needs to get organized. This preparation must take place before the first day on the job not when the employee walks in the door. Running around gathering documents and finding someone to train the new hire after he or she has already arrived sets a bad precedent and interferes with a new hire’s success on the job. Being organized means thinking through everything that an employee will need for mastering the job expectations and tasks. It’s important to assign a trainer to the new hire to greet him as soon as he steps in the door. The trainer should design and pull together materials that will outline job tasks, steps and responsibilities.

Being Sensitive to a New Employee’s Learning Style

Delivering an effective training session to a new employee requires understanding how he or she processes information. Not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way. One person might quickly grasp new information by simply hearing it. Another person might need to take copious notes. Still, other people need to get involved in actually doing a task repeatedly before mastering it. An effective job trainer can assess these various learning styles by observing and by asking questions to make sure that information is being retained.

With a little bit of planning and preparation, training a new hire can be a pleasant and productive experience for all involved.

Despite today’s constantly fluctuating economy, people are still taking the reigns and opening small businesses all over the country. Perhaps that’s exactly what you’re considering at this very moment. You have your business idea and you know what you want to accomplish with that business. Maybe you even have office or building space picked out for your new business.

What about funding? It can be a confusing topic. Any financial institution can offer you funding. And as far as options go, you typically have four major ones to choose from, though there are more. The following list explains your options for small business financing.

Angel Investors: These are typically people who can invest large sums of money into a small business. This kind of investor usually invests in start-up businesses and after a year or two, will want a say so in how the business is run. Occasionally, a team of angel investors will get together and invest in a business.

Franchises: This may be an answer to the “How do I get more funding?” question, especially for small businesses that are doing well and have been up and running for two years or more. Expanding a business through franchising brings in extra fees and will expand your customer base.

Insurance: Some small business owners will borrow money against their life insurance policies. This typically offers very low interest rates and allows one to borrow up to 80% of the value of their policy to help fund a business venture. The only catch is that the business owner has to have held the policy for a number of years before he or she can borrow money against it.

Venture Capital: This involves money from a large corporation involved with the small business from the starting point. The corporation has a say in how the company is run much like the angel investor, but can invest much more money—up to $10 million.

If you already own a small business, chances are you acquired a small business loan to help with financing. This is what most people do when starting a new business venture, but it should be noted that a small business loan isn’t the only option for financing a small business. Another option is to find people or corporations to invest money in your new business. Securing a business loan can be less time-consuming and easier, but depending on your business and what you future plans are, finding investors can be a better idea.

Finding investors can be time-consuming and a bit tricky, but the following list of steps will help streamline the process.

Before starting your search for investors, develop a business plan and support it with any relevant research. Investors will want to know what they’re putting money into before they commit to it. If you have a list of potential investors, do you’re research and make sure they’re what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for big investors, do some research and make a list of the people and/or firms that typically put money into businesses like your own. Make sure you know how much they usually invest and what their motives are for the investment.

If you’re looking for angel investors, post on their websites/networks. If someone is interested, they will contact you and you can discuss the matter further.

Asking family members and friends to invest in your new business is another option. Present your business plan and any other relevant information in a professional manner. If you’re shy about asking them to invest, then ask if they know of anyone looking to invest or inquire about small investment firms. You never know who might be able to point you in the right direction when searching for investors.

Finding someone to assist in the exportation of your goods and services can be a bit tricky at times, especially if you’re new to the world of exporting. Maybe you’ve already identified the foreign markets you want to export to. Maybe not. In either case, there are many ways you can go about finding the individual or company that fits best with your exportation plans. Below are some of the suggested ways to find export partners and make trading friends and contacts.

Attend the meetings that trade associations and government agencies hold. It’s a great way of networking and almost guarantees that you’ll make contacts and learn something new about the export business. Take it a step further, if you’d like, and join a trade association that interests you.

Conducting research on countries classified as “tread-friendly” is a great idea. Once you know which foreign markets are participating in free and active trading, you can search for potential contacts within those markets.

Develop a well-planned sales pitch. Be sure to save it in a variety of formats. By doing so, you’ll be able to reach more investors/buyers. Not everyone has a computer or smartphone. Being able to deliver your sales pitch in any way possible should be a priority.

Use the Internet to visit and participate in trade forums and conduct further research in trading databases. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of resources across the Web that will help you locate potential friends, contacts, and partners. Some of the larger databases include the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and other government-run resources.

Perhaps one of the best pieces of advice is to attend trade shows and conventions as often as possible. Conventions are a great place to make contacts, hear about what other companies are doing with their export business, and develop lasting business friendships.

Starting a small business can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be overwhelming, stressful, and confusing, especially if you’re relatively new to business and have no idea where to begin. If you’ve decided to start your own business, you’ve already made one important decision: Taking control of your own career.

When starting any type of business, there are some fundamental steps you’ll need to take in order to make sure the process goes smoothly. Your goals should include long-term success, loyal customers, and the ability to stay afloat among competition. Below is a brief list of points that will get you started in the small business world.

When deciding on a business idea, stick with something you’re good at or something you know a lot about. Hobbies have been proven success stories in the small business arena. If you love baking, open a bakery. If you’re a sports nut, open a sporting goods store. Loving what you do is important.

Establish a sound business plan. Know what your goals are and explain how you plan to reach them. The business plan is basically the blueprint for your business. Make it detailed, easy to follow, and make sure it is well written. Without a business plan, your business has no guide.

Secure the right amount of financing. There are plenty of resources available on the Internet to help you understand more about this. Make sure your business plan explains your funding plan. Banks are hesitant to loan large amounts of money to start-ups, so growing your business slowly may be a good idea.

Be sure you have the required licenses/paperwork in order for your business to operate. You can get this information easily by contacting the municipality where your business will be located. Having the right paperwork will ensure smooth business operations.

Choosing a name for your business involves more thought than you may think. Once a name is chosen and registered, it’s very difficult to change. Your business publications, business cards, and the items you produce all revolve around the name of the business. When choosing a name, it’s important to keep your core business values in mind and make sure the name fits the business.

Many people employ professional naming firms when attempting to develop a name that fits the business as a whole. These firms can also address any issues that could arise with trademark copyrights and violations. The fees they charge can sometimes be quite high, but with all of the information they possess and the help they offer, it’s worth it in most cases.

The name of a business should convey more than just what the business does or offers. A message should be conveyed as well. You’ll need to decide what that message should be. It could be that the company is specialized or knowledgeable, or that discounts are offered. Always develop a list of names.

Ask others for input—friends, family, fellow business owners—and then narrow the original list even further. When doing this, be sure the name carries no misinterpretations and that it conveys a positive message about your business. Be sure the name works well within your marketing plan and keep future expansion in mind as well. Some names based on the location of the company don’t work as well if you plan to expand.

When you’ve chosen a name, make sure you go about registering it correctly and be sure you can use it legally. Registration of business names varies by state, so be sure to check on the rules for your state. It’s recommended that, to avoid trademark infringements, you search in the Thomas Register.

Many people manage their own careers through home-based businesses every year. These businesses range from freelance writing to website design to small daycare centers. If you’ve found that you need more freedom in your workday or have troubles working the normal 9-to-5 grind because of family or other obligations, then a home-based business may be just what you’re looking for.

If you already have an idea in mind for your own home-based business, remember that it is still a business and should operate like one. As such, there are certain points that you should keep in mind in order to ensure your knew business is successful.

As with any other type of business, it’s important to develop a sound business plan. This will help you further narrow the list of services you’re going to offer and will also outline your marketing strategies. Occasionally, clients will ask to see your business plan when deciding whether or not to work with you.

Because no business is the same as the next, it’s very important for you to determine where your target market lies. Once that is done, you can identify potential clients and get in touch with them regarding the services you offer.

Your home office is very important and should be treated as regular office space would be. Keep things organized and easily retrievable. Home office space should be separate from the rest of your house, preferably somewhere quiet so your work isn’t disturbed. A home-based business is still a job and will have deadlines that must be kept.

Creating a website for your home-based business is highly recommended. As with any other kind of business, a well-developed, easily navigable website will “put you on the map.” An Internet presence further markets your services and can even bring in international customers in addition to adding more local clients.

The world of exporting goods and services can be a bit overwhelming once entered, especially for small business owners and first-time exporters. One of the most important items to check off your list is finding reliable export partners and distributors. Depending on how many foreign markets you plan to export to, or how large they are, this task could be quite a large undertaking.

Identifying potential partners and distributors for your goods and services can be rather difficult if you’re not sure where or how to go about it. There is good news, though. When entering this stage of setting up your export business, you have numerous options for locating potential partners and distributors. Below is a list of options you may want to consider.

Get in touch with your current local distributors. They can almost always offer further contacts that can help you in foreign markets.

Network as much as possible. Conversing with others who have already gone through the process is an invaluable piece of advice. Trade shows are another great resource for getting contact information for overseas distributors.

Contact local offices, including state offices. Many will have databases that include contacts in foreign markets. Tell them what you’re plans are and what you’re looking for. They will almost always offer help.

The U.S. Department of Commerce is another invaluable resource on foreign markets if you’re willing to pay. The USDOC charges around $300 for a search for foreign distributors. Your results will usually include six companies.

The National Trade Data Bank is a great resource for foreign partners, as is the Internet itself. A simple Google search will turn up numerous helpful websites, including some that are specialized.

There are numerous, wide-ranging resources to get you started. Use them, and once you have a list of potential partners, narrow it. Conduct further research on the narrowed list. The right distributor will ensure a lasting business relationship

When you decide to take your business into international markets via exports, there are many important factors to consider—target markets, business plans, and pricing strategies among others—but perhaps the most significant item is that you have reliable export partners in the foreign markets.

There are numerous candidates available to partner with and choosing from them probably isn’t easy. However, there are steps to follow in order to be sure the person you’re trading with will be reliable throughout your relationship. Those steps are as follows:

Before beginning any type of business, be sure you have all relevant contact information for potential partners, including telephone numbers, business addresses, and email addresses. Confirm that all of the information belongs to the same business.

When you have telephone numbers for potential partners, always call them before conducting any sort of business or exchange of goods. Be sure the contact actually works for the company and make sure the number you’re calling is a fixed number, rather than a cell phone number.

In many foreign markets, you can research the backgrounds and credit information on almost any company within that country. If possible, do so. While credit reports are sometimes a matter of public record in other countries, you can also further your knowledge on the company by ordering a credit report.

Always make sure the foreign company is registered as such within its country. Asking for a Certificate of Good Standing from a foreign partner is always a good idea as well. This way, you’ll know the company is what it says it is and that it operates as it should.

By following these steps, you will learn more about potential business partners in foreign markets, thus making your final choice much easier. A strong and lasting export relationship is key to the success of any export business.

You’ve gotten your business off the ground and have a steady cash flow and a great base of loyal customers, but you’re looking to expand a bit. Exporting your goods and/or services seems like the logical next step, right? It’s not a bad idea, but be aware of the fact that it takes quite a bit of work and can be very time-consuming. As with your original business plan, the success of an export business depends on a solid business plan and business management.

The steps below will help you get started on the road to taking your business and its products to international markets:

After identifying your target foreign markets, you can acquire helpful items such as business contacts, manufacturing lists, and other types of industry directories by contacting the consulates/embassies in those countries.

Always stay in contact with the consulates in those countries and contact the tax departments to acquire a registration number for all of your exports.

Make sure to find out if the government requires any special licensing to operate an export business. If so, acquire a license as quickly as possible so you can begin exporting goods to your foreign markets.

Always check and make sure your goods/services are okay to be exported. There are “high risk” and “low risk” items, and if you’re a first time exporter, sticking to low risk items is always a good idea until you get your footing in the foreign markets.

Beware of trade embargoes or barriers. Check with your government and ask if any exist with the countries you want to export to. Check with the foreign governments as well to make sure no restrictions on goods/services exist.

Get a letter of credit from your bank. This will allow you to trade in foreign markets and will help lower any risks while trading. Banks will always ensure goods and services are delivered.

If you own a business, the world of exporting can be exciting and can present an entirely new side to what you do as a businessperson. It can also be confusing and a bit overwhelming, especially if you’ve never dealt with exports before. There are many steps to take and things to consider when deciding whether or not to export your business and/or products.

What is Exporting?

Exporting is sending products or services to a foreign country with the intent of sale or trade. The practice proves very beneficial for most businesses, but for a small business to do so takes time. Exporting can increase sales, bring in new customers, and increase the reputation of the business if done correctly.

What Should I Consider When Planning for Business Exportation?

If you think exporting could possibly help your business, the first thing to do is develop a solid international business plan. Identify which markets you would like to target and consider the following questions when drafting your plan:

Is there demand for your product? How high is it?

How much will it cost your business to export products/services?

What is the current state of the economy in your target markets?

Based on economic state, what will your pricing strategies entail?

What will your marketing strategy include?

What are your projected sales figures for each target market?

Will there be any competition within your target markets?

Will you have easy access to your target markets?

Once you consider these items, you can identify any problem areas and conduct further research to solve them. It’s best to solve any problem areas right away in order to expedite the exportation process. The sooner you do this, you’ll be able to get your products to foreign markets quicker and then can focus on sales and cash flow.

Many new small business owners have great ideas. Only a fraction of those ideas will develop into thriving businesses lasting longer than a year. Numerous new business owners tend to jump right into business without planning ahead or researching what needs to be done to make a business successful. Owning and maintaining a successful small business is hard work, but it can be done with planning, executing those plans, and avoiding the following three pitfalls:

Lack of Solid Planning/Business Knowledge: It is said that nearly 70% of small businesses fail because of this. Faulty business planning and the lack of business/product knowledge almost guarantees failure. Do your research and make sure you know your business through and through. Write a firm business plan and always be on the lookout for additional training for yourself, as well as your employees. Competency is key in a successful business.

Mediocre Management: Successful management of a small business—especially a new one—requires expertise and competency. Many new business owners know little about finance, the hiring process, selling, or marketing products. Research these areas and be sure you have a firm grasp of them, especially if you’ll be managing your employees. Many tech schools offer classes in these areas. Consider them, as they may be a good option.

Insufficient Funding: Operating a small business means exactly that. As such, upon start-up, you won’t have millions of dollars at your disposal. Be sure you’ve planned and have acquired the right amount of money to fund your start-up. Keep an eye on cash flow. As a new business, your main concern should be survival, especially in the first year. Sometimes, it’s smarter to choose a business with relatively low start-up costs. After you have a foot in the door and your business is on firm ground and bringing in money, you can always expand it and grow.

The first year of business operation is the most crucial. Your performance over those first twelve months will ultimately show whether your business is set to fail or grow exponentially and operate smoothly. The first year of business operation is important for numerous reasons. Typically, those months are when your business will spend the most money. After all, it takes time to build your product, as well as a loyal customer base for it.

Because the first year will determine whether your business will succeed or fail, there are many important tips to follow to ensure success and a loyal customer base. The following is a brief list of points to consider during your first year of business operations:

Keep an eye on taxes. Many new business owners forget about payroll taxes and thus fall behind in payments. Once behind, it’s hard to get back on track with limited funds. Budgeting taxes into your business plan is the best way to combat this.

Beware of high expectations the first year. Many new businesses won’t bring in a ton of money in the first twelve months. Having modest expectations/projections for your business is a great way to keep from seeing your operation as a failure when it’s anything but.

Take the time to learn about your product and your target markets. The first year of a business is the best time for this. Start as soon as possible. It takes time to learn a product inside and out, and the more you know about your target market, the better your marketing and sales strategies will be.

Always remember that failure isn’t bad in every case. If, for some reason, you find your business heading south, keep in mind that closing a business is better than hemorrhaging money. It only leads to more bills. Yes, sometimes failure is okay.

Whether your business is importing or exporting goods to foreign countries, you will need some kind of business agreement with the person you are buying or selling from. This can be difficult as you may have different languages and different legal requirements to follow. It is important to reach some kind of agreement with the party, so that if something were to occur in or after transit to the products, you are both covered.

The business agreement should provide a clear description of the product that you are providing. You will want it’s exact specifications, including size, weight and dimension. This is so if anything is damaged in transit between countries, you know what you did or did not get. Also, was shipping covered by you or the person that you are doing business with? These are important items to discuss so that you are both clear in your expectations.

This product should have distinct pricing guidelines, with a receipt. After the price is set you will need to agree on how the product will be paid for. Will it be paid for by credit, open account, consignment or some kind of bartering arrangement. If there is damage to the product, how will this be dealt with and who will lose their money in the arrangement-one or both of you? Written contracts made before the items are shipped are the best way to ensure that if an item does arrived damaged, there is a solution that will make everyone satisfied.

Finally, you should know all the legal regulations in importing and exporting goods to other countries. Your products may be taxed in the United States and the other country, there may difficulties in resolving any disputes over products damaged or not received. Also, one must know that monetary exchange rates may make it difficult to conduct business.

There are many ways to pass the time on the internet. Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace occupy the time and keep people connected. Shopping opportunities abound and games are available by the millions. One common pastime, internet gambling, whether it’s online poker games or sports betting sites, is enjoyed by thousands. Still, these types of sites can leave a person wondering about security and safety. The gambling industry is worth billions of dollars annually and is projected to grow by leaps and bounds over the next few years. With all this money floating around, there are surely scammers and crooks waiting in the wings waiting to make off with part of it too. Players need to take precautions to protect themselves and their hard-earned cash.

Investigate every site you choose to gamble at. It truly is worth the time to investigate a website’s history and regulatory compliance before allowing them access to any of your personal information or money. Visit online forums and message boards for information on specific sites. If that fails, enter the site’s name into your favorite search engine. Most of the time, negative information shows in search results before positive.

Online gambling sites must be genuine and secure. Reputable sites will have high levels of security to protect their clients from identity theft, phishing, and other scams. Before offering up your financial and personal information, make sure websites are doing everything possible to protect you and your hard earned cash. Many gambling sites use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TSL) measures to protect patrons. Anytime you’re gambling, make sure the server is secure as well. Servers should use software that tracks down hackers to keep all games and bets fair and square. If you’re overly concerned about security, host a private, invitation only game.

Starting your business requires a lot of forethought and planning, especially when it involves the food industry. Whether you are starting a business on your own or through a franchise, there are business plans, licences, venues and start up costs to think about, not to mention the funding required.

A coffee shop is a good business to get into in North America as we have a culture of having coffee on the run and franchises like Starbucks and Tim Hortons have paved the way for us. When you decide to open a coffee shop, you need to research the business plan thoroughly. Make sure that the venue you have chosen is suitable to the type of business you plan to open and that there is market out there for your coffee shop.

Funding is a key factor and you will need restaurant supplies. Everything from equipment to brew the coffee to the glassware you intend to serve it on. These things can quickly add up and it is best to keep your operating costs as low as possible until you are confident and up and running. You can get these supplies at a discounted rate from internet supplies who specialize in this type of business.

It can be alarming how quickly available funds are eaten up, so make sure you do your homework and account for every tiny detail in your business plan. This is a case where success will be in the minute details so don’t hurry this process along. Take your time and consult professionals to help you in your new business venture.

My friends and I own a nice condo building in the San Diego, California area. Well, it is actually three buildings and they were in pretty bad shape when we bought them. The property went into foreclosure and previous management company let many of the units fall into disrepair. We ended up gutting the majority of the units and remodeling them. Plus, we had to hire landscapers to come in and basically bulldoze the overgrown landscape and start fresh. Since we were starting fresh, we also got rid of the management company. It was my duty to find us a new Oceanside property management company and to make sure that hey understood the whole HOA and Condo Asscociation managenment and set-up. I found a great one by doing a search online and I thought I would pass along a some tips and information that I learned along the way.

One of the biggest things you must make sure your management company understands is the accounting side of things. There will be budgets, billing statements and collections, preparing financial statements and much more. They will be responsible for all the record keeping of the Association. That entails keeping a list of homeowner/members, minutes of meetings, rule violations and much more. Like other property managers, they need to have an emergency contact available 24/7 and have a staff to complete repairs. You will need them to help with setting up and attending Board meetings. They will be responsible for inspecting properties and ensuring that no one is in violation of Condo Association rules and regulations.

This type of property management is not simple. Do yourself a favor and do a little research online before hiring a company to manage your condominiums and set up our homeowners association. Then visit them and find out if they are the right fit. Remember, they are there to make your life easier and protect your investment.

If you’re in business for yourself, and you use a computer for that business, you’re probably already international. Even if you don’t (or didn’t) plan to be, the nature of the Internet means that anyone can find you, even if they’re half a world away from you. Whether you’ll ship to them is a different story, of course, but what if you’re providing a service that has no tangible product, or something that can be downloaded? Then, there is no concern about the cost of shipping something and no reason why they shouldn’t (or can’t) purchase from you. Almost all online businesses take payments the same way, so there’s no issue there, either.

Of course, handling international business can get much more complex than that, depending on what type of business you’re doing and how large your company is. Don’t get discouraged if your company hasn’t grown as much as you would like, though. You can get there through hard work and persistence. One thing you should do in order to keep your business going strong is make sure your computer is the best it can be. Download any software that you need, update drivers, and be sure that you’re offering your customers a good experience on your website.

If they like what they see, responses are prompt, and they are getting what they need at a good price and without a hassle, they’re much more likely to keep coming back to you and choosing you for their purchases. International business, thanks to the Internet, doesn’t really need to be much different from business that’s conducted in your home country, so keep that in mind when you’re branching out and working with others. They’re mostly like you, in many ways. Give them a good experience, and they’ll generally return that courtesy.

Your business is your lifeline and the thing you want to dedicate the most time to. You have poured hours and hours into making your business as good as it can possibly be, but you are finding that each and every day there is more and more that you aren’t getting accomplished in your business. There are a great number of ways that you can take less time doing back office management, and more time up on the sales floor.

One way to ease the hassle of balancing your business is to get your financial resources organized and easily accessible at all times. A lot of business owners, especially those who are struggling and can’t hire on specific staff for accounting are utilizing personalized accounting software that will help you to manage your finances and your time. Every day you are realizing that you need to get more money out of your business. Well, don’t worry. There is money to be made if you think about the following things.

Payroll

This is where most employers of a small business make their biggest mistakes. This is for two reasons. The first is that they won’t hire anyone. This can be foolish in a lot of cases. Time is money and it’s the truth If there is a money making part of your business that is suffering because you are too busy taking care of busy work then you need to consider hiring someone. It might seem like a real pain to hire someone who you have to pay but it makes total sense for you in the long run.

The other issue is that people are carrying more employees than they need. You often don’t see this in a small business but there are exceptions. Take your time to evaluate where your business is lacking. If it is then consider hiring someone to give you a chance to focus on other areas. If your business seems to be running efficiently then you need to figure out if it could run efficiently with a few less people.

Payroll can absolutely make or break a company. Hiring too much or too little can make a company be disorganized and can lead to burnout or laziness. Do yourself a favor and make sure you know what you are doing before laying someone off. It’s an unpleasant situation and one that no one wants to be a part of.

When it comes to cutbacks in business there are always going to be a time when they will need to be made. One of the things that often happens first when it comes to cutbacks is laying off employees. This is not a favorable position for an employer but it is often the easiest to do in many respects. IF you own a business then the idea of having to let a solid employee go is something that doesn’t sit well with you. You want to keep them around but you cannot. Or at least you don’t think you can. The truth is that you most certainly can keep them around if you try out some serious cost cutting measures.

First things first you must keep track of your inventory. Are you ordering more than you can handle? Is it more than you need? These things are solid questions to ask. Many times businesses get into the habit of ordering more when times are flush but then don’t cut back on the ordering when times are tight. This could easily replace the payroll hours you are looking to cut.

What about asking some of the other employees to cut back some of their hours. An employee will gladly those three hours a week as opposed to their entire shift. People need money in their pockets so that is a big reason why they will be willing to help out however they can.

If those things fail you should consider the possibility of cutting benefits instead. Most employees get cut because they are full time employees with benefits. Cutting their benefits will say you a tremendous amount of money and will ensure that they get to keep their jobs.

If you are allowed to you might want to make them an independent contractor, especially if the work can be done outside of the company. You should always be working to keep their jobs for them.

Pretty much since the invention of the printing press there have been business cards. These are the little cards exchanged during business meetings. There was a time when all you needed to put on a business card was your name and phone number. Now every new piece of information can go on a card from your email address, website, blog, fax and even Twitter account. Although a necessity for businesses, the business card can also be used as a classy personal card of introduction.

Consider how many times you share your contact information during the course of a typical week. You might drop off some articles of clothing for refitting and will need to be called when they are ready to be picked up. Leave behind your business card. Your favorite wine might be coming in a special shipment. If the store owner has your business card they can call you right away. This is much more effective than scribbling your name and number of a scrap of paper that could get lost. Folks hang onto business cards.

The type of business card you select can also say a lot about your personality. It can be a simple yet elegant design. There is also a wide variety of paper stock and colors to choose from. No need for plain white and Times Roman font… unless that’s your favorite! And don’t discount one of the most beneficial reasons for having a supply of business cards readily available. Suppose you meet a special someone in passing. Dropping them your business card lets them know you’re interested and how to contact you. You can even up the ante by jotting a quick note on the back of your business card. If you’re shy, have a waiter carry your business card to the person you want to meet. Imagine the smiles you can invoke with that.

Not everyone owns their own business. Many people are simply there to run the business for someone. One of the hardest situations for a person to go into is a business where they are the new guy in charge of getting things better. It’s a difficult situation but business management is all about getting better at difficult situations. Here are some very simple and effective tips to managing in any environment.

Be Personable

Many bosses these days are just faces and they come in and attempt to make no connection to their employees. There is something very wrong about this and it’s not a good way to be a part of the team. Go up to each and every employee and introduce yourself and ask them to tell you a little bit about them. Managing is about connecting with people and connecting has to do with getting to know people. This will make them feel at ease. After all you need these people to help you produce. Don’t make them strangers.

Be Direct

Change has to start instantly. People will always be resistant to it but if that is what is required in order to get the best out of people then you can’t be afraid to do it right away. Little changes will be the best thing. Just change the music in the office or change anything that will send a message to the rest of the office that it’s a new day and you are not messing around.

Be Efficient

Make the changes that you feel are the best for the overall quality of the company. When employees question the changes make sure you explain why the changes are being made. Employees want to know just why they are making these changes. Not telling them will ensure that they don’t bother to implement these new ways into their daily work routine. Make sure you make changes that are in the best interest of the company at all times.

To start an import export business you will not need much more than a telephone, computer and file system. This may be one of the easiest business to ever start, since the overhead is so low and the upfront cash needed is minimal. The biggest component of an import/export business is the desire to make it work, the commitment to tough it out during the hard times and a willingness to sell yourself and business to perfect strangers.

The first and most important step to starting an import /export business is to find contacts. If you have friends or family in foreign countries, now is the time to call them to discuss any business contacts they may have there. Foreign consulates and embassies are also great places to meet contacts for distribution purposes. They may know companies in their countries looking to sell their goods in America.

Once you have established some contacts it is time to communicate with them and attempt to make a business connection. Writing letters to companies and requesting the names and addresses of appropriate person to contact about importing and exporting possibilities is the first step in the communication process. Once you have names of the appropriate people of interests, write them a personal letter explaining your business and your goals. Ask what products they want to import and/or export?

Once you have established contacts and settled on items to import and export it is important to find the appropriate market to sell them in. Read trade magazines of the industry that your products belong to get a better grasp as to how your product has been selling and where it is has been selling. This will help you determine how to market your product, price your product and get a grasp on the competition. To be successful in this business, you will need to keep an eye on trends and product news.

Importing and exporting businesses are often very easy to start, and require little financial commitment up front. This make it a very popular choice for those looking to start a small business. This kind of business does not require years of experience or education, but a willingness to work hard and learn fast. This type of business requires a business owner who will pay very close attention to the daily ins and outs of their exporting/importing business, who has great organization skills, and an eagerness to work with people all over the world.

As an import/export agent based in the United States you are essentially a matchmaker. Your main job will be to find manufacturers of domestic goods looking for foreign distributors. Many foreign companies are looking for distributors in the United States, and you can find solid connections quite quickly using the internet and some business savvy.

Your commission on these items ranges from 5 to 15 percent, and you can become quite lucrative in this field. The more distributors you find, the more money you can make. Some ideas of goods that you can import/export are sporting goods, watches, games, radios, clothes and shoes. Be sure to pick items that are popular with consumers at the moment. It would not be advantageous to choose to import cabbage patch dolls in today’s economy, as they are no longer popular. Finding an item that is desired by many is the goal of an import and export business. The more popular the item, the more money you will make.

If you are looking to form an import and export business with others, make sure that you diversify your partnerships. If you know a lot about garments and handbags, make sure your team member is familiar with electronics or technology. This will broaden the type of importing and exporting you do and will make more money for your business in the long run.

International trading is used to get products made in other countries, and these products may be significantly cheaper than if the product were made in the home country. Other times a country will create a product that the home country is unable to create due to lack of natural resources or workers. Both cases provide a benefit to both countries-as one country benefits from the receiving pay for work that they have completed and the other country gets their needed products at a much lower cost than they would in their own country.

Despite the obvious advantages of international trading, there are several things to consider when doing this kind of trade. One, you should definitely involve legal representation that understands international trading laws. There are so many complicated laws involving international trading and buying that someone who is in an expert in the subject should be on hand to give advice about contracts, payment and taxes involved. This will save a future headache of having incomplete or incorrect paperwork which could slow things down or stop the trade all together.

There may be fees, taxes and licenses that have to be obtained before any trading can take place. Thoroughly research all these items needed before jumping head first into the trade. These regulations are based upon how much product you are shipping or buying, and how you will be conducting this business. In some circumstances buying products and using an air carrier versus a ship can be more advantageous and vice versa.

Whether you will personally in touch with an overseas supplier, or you have someone else be the contact person you should attempt to understand the complicated regulations and laws that must be dealt with. You can save thousands of dollars by having products manufactured overseas, but you must understand how to get the said supplies to your business without breaking any tariff or tax laws, and for the lowest cost possible.

Every business, at some point or another, needs to consider very carefully the idea of global expansion. It’s not something that the local mom and pop organization can pull off or even consider but it is something that bigger businesses, even if they aren’t in the Fortune 500, that needs to be addressed. Global expansion is a plus for most businesses and in a variety of ways. Here are the reasons your business might want to consider global expansion.

Cost

Cost is the problem in business most often. People for years had been avoiding global expansion because the cost to get into foreign markets is incredibly high. But these days that isn’t the case at all. There are a number of foreign markets that can be tapped into without very much risk to the overall financial help of the business. Especially with technology growing and the Internet keeping everyone connected. The cost for going global is allowing you the opportunity to do it much earlier in your businesses inception.

Customer Base

Isn’t the goal of any company to increase the customer base. When you are going global you can increase your customer base in ways that you had never thought of before. It allows so many people to be connected to the rest of the world in ways that they never thought possible.

Local Visibility

Every company is looking to increase their visibility locally. This is the best way for them to do it. Having a global presence makes sure that there is a sort of stature that will make your company more attractive to the local customer base. These days every market has stiff competition and that competition must be met with a serious response. Going global will be part of that serious response. It does take some planning and it takes a lot of patience but if you are smart about it you can be assured that your business will grow and grow.

Bringing your business overseas is becoming a necessity to maximize the value of your business. While there are more than enough business cards floating around from companies that believe they are big players, the biggest players are finding themselves in a global expansion.

So how do you go from a local giant to a global one? The ease of transitioning your business into the global economy isn’t quite as difficult as you think. The hardest part initially is figuring out where you fit in globally. Everyone these days is going to the U.S and China respectively, but you might not even fit in those markets. Make sure you aren’t limiting yourself by focusing too much on China and the United States.

Your challenge is to figure out where your product or service best fits in. If you are providing something, you need to think about demand. Where is what you have to offer needed? The truth is that there might be a limited market at first, so you want to tap into smaller markets and then move forward.

Talking to other business contacts you have made is a great way to gain perspective about your company. Talking to people who can look at your business objectively, and have some knowledge of the foreign markets, will tell you where your business best fits in.

The other thing to keep in mind is that a lot of your expansion will depend on the investors in your company being on board. Having the full faith and backing of the people who are at risk is a great feeling and one that will keep you satisfied as you make your venture into uncharted territory. Don’t be confused about the challenge that lies ahead. It won’t be easy, but if you make it work, the payoff will be enormous.

There are a lot of things as the owner of a business that you would rather not do. There might be nothing more awful than having to say to someone that they are no longer employed with your company. If they were stealing or if they were being a real beast to deal with you might not feel so bad about saying it but when the employee is someone you have really liked but the state of the business suggests that you are going to have to let them go it can be tough. Dealing with telling them is hard and here are some things to think about.

Before you go ahead and start laying people off you might want to make sure that this is the best move possible. Have you cut costs in other areas? Have you cut cost on your inventory? Is this just a temporary setback. It’s not that you haven’t thought of these things but you have to make sure that you have explored every area before telling someone who counts on the paycheck that they will not be able to get one from you again.

If you finally do have to have the conversation then you should have it early in the morning. Don’t make them put in a full day if they aren’t going to want to. Give them the news well before lunch and let them know that they can finish the shift but there are not obligated to. Also let them know just why they are being fired. If they aren’t the only employee in the building they will wonder why there aren’t others being fired. This is for you to tell them and be honest with them. Employees may be upset with you buy they will certainly appreciate the honesty. And be firm. They might want to talk their way back into a job. Let them know that it is out of the question. But be easy.

Bringing your business to another market is a challenge, but bringing it to a foreign market seems like an impossibility. With the growing economic strains that the world is feeling there is an increasing importance on expanding your business. However, bringing your business abroad is something that you have to do right, because failure could mean failure for your local business.

The important thing about bringing your business to another market is the marketing itself. While locally you can pass out business cards in order to increase visibility and exposure, abroad you must do things differently. You must look at the bigger picture and plan ahead for you marketing. Greasing the wheels prior to your entrance into the foreign market could be a good way to be ahead of your project.

The easiest way to get your business going is to use the contacts you have established locally. If you have partners or clients that have worked with you locally, they may have contacts with other businesses abroad. They might be able to get your foot in the door when you get your product or service over there.

Look into advertising firms that you have used locally and see what they can tell you about the market. They may know of how to effectively market your product in other parts of the world. If not, they may know of a company you can use. It might be a costly investment, but a good investment nonetheless.

Do your research on these markets before you even think of getting involved in business abroad. You have too much riding on your ability to thrive in a market to go into it blindly. You have to assess if there is a real need for what you provide. It will be key in the success of your business.
